Cecil's Soldiers:
Stories from the World War II Generation
By Jenifer Grindle Dolde
In the quieter days before World War II, the pace of life in
small towns and on farms in Cecil
County continued much as
it had since the turn of the century. For
the boys and girls who were born or came of age during the 1920s and 1930s, the
Great Depression affected them in ordinary and profound ways. Families cut back, pitched in, and worked
hard to maintain their simple way of life, but this was nothing new. What the young people of Cecil County
did not anticipate is the challenges they faced during the Depression would
prepare them for a time of national crisis.
War gave every citizen a new and even more challenging role. They responded reluctantly, bravely, eagerly,
fearfully, and patriotically. Little did
they know how much their lives and their homes would be
changed.
