Cecil’s Home Movies

The Society has launched a new collection initiative aimed at capturing largely forgotten home movies made in Cecil County.  Some of those flickering images recall how area families celebrated holidays, birthdays, and graduations.  Others focus on sports and school events, town parades, and fairs, but also squeezed on the aging footage are valuable scenes of the landscape and our built environment.  These relics from the past grow more valuable with each passing decade for they capture a few minutes of often forgotten time in a valuable format.

We kicked off our first contribution from Jane Bellmyer when she brought in several reels of 8-mm home film from the mid-1960s showing the Weaver family, a boat launch at Wiley Manufacturing in Port Deposit, the Conowingo Dam, the Susquehanna River, and the bridges across the waterway.  We have out-takes of those digitized so you may watch them on your computer.  Click on the buttons on the left to examine these movies.
