As the
Historical Society continues enhancing services offered to members and the
public, the organization announced its first annual speakers series. Three times during the 2005-06 season, costumed
interpreters will reverse the clock as they take audiences back in time to hear
an important figure from the nation’s past.
During these lively and entertaining programs you will encounter Thomas
Jefferson, Clara Barton, and Harriet Tubman.
Also, during the free programs, which have been underwritten by generous
grants from Maryland Humanities Council and the Cecil County Special Events
Committee, guests have the opportunity to ask questions and engage speakers in
conversations. All performances are at
the Society’s headquarters, 135 E. Main Street in Elkton.
For the
first program on Oct. 14, Clara Barton, the Civil War heroine, who risked her
life to save others, will be portrayed by Mary Ann Jung. Her unique and energetic show is performed
in an authentic costume, accent, and attitude for her characters’ time periods. Audience members journey back to the Civil
War and discover why Americans went to war and what that meant on a personal
level. Finally, they learn how Clara
Barton founded the Red Cross in America and still inspires individuals to
“Never Give Up!” The program is free and open to the public.
