Diary of a Soldier Boy By James E. Armstrong III
"A time capsule opened when my cousin Alan Russell found in the possession of a more distant cousin the Civil War Diary of our great grandfather James Eusebius Armstrong, then a private in the Company H, 2d Maryland Volunteers, Eastern Shore Regiment." That is how James E. Armstrong III opens his book, which is based on the Civil War diary of his great grandfather. "Soldier Boy," as he took to calling himself, was a Port Deposit, Maryland boy. In 1860, he was working as a cordwainer or shoemaker in the Susquehanna River town, but the drums of war caused him to leave Port Deposit and enlist in one of two companies organized by Colonel Robert S. Rodgers in nearby Havre de Grace, Maryland. Information in his diary correlates perfectly with the regimental records from the time of the enlistment of young James at Baltimore, August 15, 1862, until his discharge in Baltimore on June 15, 1865. The pages of a young soldier's life unfold in this book as he sees action at Antietam, Lynchburg, and Berryville.
