The Historical Society of Cecil County

Preserving Cecil County's History

Guy Rhoades passed away on on July 22, 2000 at the age of 81. Well known for his fine collection of photographs with a strong emphasis on Elkton visitors to Guy's home and place of business were usually shown his excellent collection of pictures. As he proudly showed his life time work of collecting and preserving local pictures, he offered fascinating facts about his images.  Born on January 26, 1919, in Elkton, he operated Colonial Cleaners for more than 40 years, retiring in 1985.

After Guy passed away the bulk of the collection of photographs and negatives was donated to the Society. This holding is strongest for images in the 19th and first-half of the 20th century and that makes it an extremely valuable holding for early photographic research. The Society was fortunate to have received this this collection. It contains over 200 images.
