Preserving Cecil County's History

The amount, rate, and patterns of population growth significantly affects a community’s longitudinal development and these data sets provide insights to investigators seeking to understand historical development patterns and for students preparing research reports.

In Cecil County, when the first national census was taken in 1790, there was a population of 13,625 people.  Ten years later, deputy marshals again tabulated the people but this time the population dropped 34 percent to 9,018.  Every ten years the enumerators returned to count heads and each time these officials found a changed county.  Sometimes the population dropped and at other times there was significant growth.  Especially in the 2nd half of the twentieth century the county experienced rapid growth, increasing, 45%, for example from 1950 to 1960.  In 2000, there were 85,951 people residing here and the 2005 estimate places the count at 97,796
